Today’s unusual story of a fun and creative community engagement project comes from Tom Cramer:
This was a hugely successful event initiated and coordinated by Minda Schweizer, a candidate of PLR’s, and intern at Common Villages. She used the on-line service nextdoor.com to invite her neighbors to a driveway gathering of wine and appetizers. The gathering was scheduled for 3-5 PM, but no one ever sat down until they left at 6:30 PM! Neighbors who never met before became fast friends. Enticed by her children’s guinea pigs in the front yard, children ran around to the back yard to play with the family’s chickens and bunnies (they are a 4-H family). When the neighbors finally went home, they left behind enough appetizers and beverages to feed an army, kind of like twelve baskets left over in the feeding of the 5,000! A new community of friendship and trust is being established in north Mission Viejo because of Minda’s initiative! Very cool.
If you decide to try out Next Door, like I did, and host a summer party (forthcoming), will you write us your story and send us your pictures? We will share them on this blog. Thanks, Minda, for inspiring me to reach out to neighbors and for the photos too.
